AMERICAN AFTERMATH

When I choose to listen to an album, I tend to listen to rather obscure bands. A lot of the bands I review are unsigned or mostly unknown. When I stumbled across Saccage, I had no idea what I was getting into. This band is fucking insane and they have a lot going for them. The hardest thing about this band’s new album Death Crust Satanique, aside from the planetary heaviness of their music, is trying to place them into a single genre. Well, I couldn’t so I decided to make one up. I’m gonna call Saccage thrashy blackened deathcrust. I do so because it is so.

From the opening track “Motörcrust” all the way to the end of the album, this is a fucking frenzy of heaviness and madness. Psychotic riffing, mind-bending drumming and vicious, gut-wrenching screams make up Saccage’s sound in a nutshell, but the…

Breaking news. Absu was forced to cancel their upcoming Chaos in Tejas performance. Here’s the skinny /via Earsplit:

“Mythological occult metal artisans ABSU regretfully announce the cancellation of their set at this weekend’s Chaos In Tejas festivities, where they were confirmed to headline the show at Red 7 this Saturday with support from Terrorism, Loss, Morbosidad, Ares Kingdom and Black Witchery.

Immediately following their bludgeoning performance at the opening night of this year’s sweltering installment of Maryland Deathfest this past Thursday night, ABSU drummer/vocalist Proscriptor had to rush back to Texas due to a knee infection. Following two instantaneous surgeries, Proscriptor will be in good health and back to 110% efficiency by the mid portion of June, but not in time to perform as scheduled on Saturday night.

This cancellation is disheartening to the band for the moment, as they were fully planning on leveling all in earshot at the…

AMERICAN AFTERMATH

Deviated Instinct are legends in the crustpunk scene, not just in their homeland of England, but all over the world. This band was absolutely phenomenal in their early years and although I was three when they broke up, I have  always enjoyed their tunes. I knew that the band reformed back in 2007, but I wasn’t sure if new material would be recorded and released or not.

Well, it seems the crustpunk gods are looking down upon us because Deviated Instinct are in fact releasing a new album and are currently streaming a new track. You can check out the new track “Thorn In Your Flesh” below which comes off of Liberty Crawls To The Sanctuary of Slaves, out on June 10th via Profane Existence. Yeeeeah.

Dark Descent Records and Me Saco Un Ojo are thrilled to announce the release of Binah’s debut, Hallucinating in Resurrecture. Despite none of the band’s members being newcomers to Underground Metal, the entity that is Binah has spawned what is certain to be remembered as one of this year’s weightiest and hungriest-sounding full-length recordings.

Spanning ten tracks of morbid-sounding death, Hallucinating in Resurrecture captures the UK trio’s concoction of obscure and primordial sounds; one that makes no secret of their Finnish, Dutch and Swedish (even some U.S. via Autopsy and Morbid Angel) prime inspirations, yet oozes a dense ambiance that’s distinctly their own.

Whether exploring fast and serpentine sections or sparser and more reflective passages; this beast remains unrestrained in its intensity. Focusing on its song-craft and otherworldly in its vibes; familiar yet eerie, Hallucinating in Resurrecture is pure death.

Hallucinating in Resurrecture will be released in late June/early…

Avven
Kastalija
Released: April 2011
Folk Metal
Self-released

‘Kastalija’ is the second album from the Slovenian folk metal band Avven. According to a statement by the band their name is derived from the Welsh term ‘awen’ meaning “inspiration”.

From the start of the intro of the opening track ‘Zmaji’ the music shows its true colors as Slavic folk metal akin to the likes of Nomans Land. Avven like to sing in their native tongue and this along with the combination of metal and traditional folk instruments such as the tin whistle and the flute definitely work towards their advantage. This is seriously catchy stuff!

‘Ros’ features a female singer which gives a somewhat softer touch to the music in contrast to the main, male vocals. The violins also make the song stand out for all the right reasons. There’s something really uplifting about this particular track which tempts to try…

Moho, Manchester, United Kingdom
9th May 2012

Moho Live in Manchester is a venue which gets mixed results and after finding out that this gig would be here I was apprehensive. They can be very hit and miss with sound and the room itself is awkwardly shaped meaning short people such as myself can often miss out. However, tonight the crowd is a small and friendly affair in which I can navigate myself to a good vantage point easily.

The evening starts with the energetic Havok, looking like they’ve just rolled out of the Bay area of San Francisco circa 1985. And despite the giant gothic entrance music (which is rather jarring after listening to what comes next), they are pure and utter thrash. There are plenty of elements that sound like other trash bands, for example, you can’t help but…
